No hot water? This guide will show you how to relight your hot water service safely and easily — works for Rheem, Vulcan and AquaMAX gas units. What You’ll Need:
– Long lighter or BBQ igniter
– 5–10 minutes of time
– A bit of patience
Step 1 –
Check If the Pilot Light Is Out
If you’re getting no hot water and the burner isn’t firing, the pilot light has likely gone out.
Remove the Cover and look through, following the very small copper tubing – if there’s no small blue flame, you’re in business.
Step 2 –
Switch to PILOT Mode
Turn the knob to PILOT, then press and hold it down.
This starts the gas flowing to the pilot burner.
Step 3 & 4 –
Light the Pilot
While still holding the knob in, press the igniter button (piezo) several times, or use a long BBQ lighter to ignite through the pilot access hole.
Watch for a small blue flame in the viewing window.
Keep holding the PILOT knob down for 30–60 seconds after the flame is lit.
This lets the thermocouple heat up and keep the gas flowing.
Then slowly release the knob.
If the flame stays on – you’re good. If not, repeat from Step 2
Step 5 –
Turn to ON
Now turn the gas knob from PILOT to ON.
You should hear the burner kick in shortly afterward.
Step 6 –
You’re Done
Put any covers back on, and wait 5–10 minutes.
Your hot water should be back within the hour.
Common Issues:
– If the flame won’t stay on: Thermocouple and/or Gas control valve may be faulty
– If the igniter doesn’t spark: try a long lighter
– Still not working? You may need a plumber
